The Dependence of the Oxygen Isotope Fractionation in the Hydration
نویسندگان
چکیده
The fractionation of the oxygen isotopes in the water collected by stepwise dehydration of CUS04 -5H20 has been measured for the crystallization temperatures 25, 40 and 50 °C. From X-ray and neutron diffraction studies it is known that three different kinds of water, differing in their binding in the crystal, exist in CuS04 ,5 H20. On the basis of the results reported here it is concluded that isotopic equilibrium exists between the different kinds of water in the crystal and the mother liquor during the crystallization process. In addition it is shown that on stepwise dehydration the water molecules from the different types of sites can be separated. Consequently, the measurements provide the possibility to determine crystallization temperatures from intracrystalline oxygen isotope fractionation alone. Possible applications in isotope geothermometry are discussed.

Calculations of the Oxygen Isotope Fractionation between Hydration Water of Cations and Free Water
The oxygen isotope fractionation factors between the hydration complex of the alkali ions in the gas phase and a free water molecule have been computed on the basis of the energy surfaces calculated by Kistenmacher, Popkie and Clementi for a water molecule in the field of an alkali ion. For comparison with recently measured oxygen isotope fractionation factors in aqueous alkali halide solutions...
متن کاملKinetic fractionation of carbon and oxygen isotopes during hydration of carbon dioxide
Kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) during the inorganic hydration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in aqueous solution cause reduced stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (C=C and O=O) in the reaction product carbonic acid (H2CO3) or bicarbonate ion (HCO 3 ), relative to CO2. While such KIEs are of importance in various physicochemical, geochemical, and biological systems, very few experimental and theore...

The D/H ratio of hydrogen gas in equilibrium with water vapor over aqueous lithium chloride solutions was measured at 25 °C, using a hydrophobic platinum catalyst. Experimental details are described. The hydrogen isotope effect between the solution and pure water depends linearly on the LiCl concentration up to ca. 12 m, and at higher concentrations a marked deviation from linearity takes place...
متن کاملHydration in solution is critical for stable oxygen isotope fractionation between carbonate ion and water
Various isotope studies require accurate fractionation factors (a’s) between different chemical compounds in thermodynamic equilibrium. Although numerous isotope systems involve aqueous solutions, the conventional theory is formulated for the gas-phase and predicts incorrect a’s for many compounds dissolved in water. Here I show that quantum-chemistry calculations, which take into account solut...
متن کاملExperimental calibration of oxygen isotope fractionation between quartz and zircon
We report the results of an experimental calibration of oxygen isotope fractionation between quartz and zircon. Data were collected from 700 to 1000 C, 10–20 kbar, and in some experiments the oxygen fugacity was buffered at the fayalite–magnetite–quartz equilibrium. Oxygen isotope fractionation shows no clear dependence on oxygen fugacity or pressure. Unexpectedly, some high-temperature data (9...
